Troubleshooting Murray Riding Mowers
- 1). Start the Murray mower. Move the choke to the "Start" position, press the brake/clutch lever forward with your foot and attempt to start the mower. Check the fuel level in the mower if it does not start and add recently purchased fuel if necessary as an initial step before continuing with more in-depth troubleshooting
- 2). Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug if the mower will not start and you smell gas, indicating the engine is flooded. Loosen and remove the spark plug with a spark plug wrench. Thread a suitable replacement spark plug into the engine by hand and securely tighten with the spark plug wrench. Place the spark plug wire back on the tip of the spark plug. Start the mower and see if this fixes the problem.
- 3). Locate the battery for the Murray riding mower if a clicking sound is detected and the mower will not turn over. Tighten the battery cables onto the battery terminals with an adjustable wrench or screwdriver. Examine the cables to determine if the plastic covering is cracked or damaged and wrap with electrical tape if necessary to repair.
- 4). Raise the seat of the Murray riding mower and locate the pressure cut-off switch, if the rider still won't start. Check the terminal connections between the wires and switch for damage and proper installation. Push loose connectors onto the terminals, crimp connectors securely to the wires with pliers or wrap damaged wires with electrical tape.
- 5). Remove the cover from the air filter housing if the mower idles rough or will not run when hot. Pull the air filter from the housing and inspect for excess dirt, debris or damage. Dispose of a worn filter and replace with a new one. Wipe the inside of the filter housing with a rag before installing the new filter and secure the filter housing cover back into place.
- 6). Replace a worn cutting blade on the Murray riding mower if grass is not being cut properly or if there is excessive vibration during operation due to a damaged blade. Raise the cutting deck to the highest point and place a block of wood against the underside of the cutting deck. Turn the blade to wedge the wood in place. Loosen and remove the cutting blade with an adjustable wrench. Install a new blade, making sure to assemble the washers and blade bolt in the same order as on the old blade. Install the blade assembly into the spindle under the deck and tighten with the adjustable wrench.
- 7). Stop the mower completely and remove accumulated grass and debris from beneath the mower deck if there are problems with vibration, grass cutting and discharge of cut grass. Clear the deck with water from a garden hose or scrape it off.
