Like a bargain hunter in a discount store, you may have to snoop around a little to find a memorable restaurant that doesn’t soak up your souvenir budget. There is a definite European bistro atmosphere to most of the restaurants along Queens Street, and a few of them are inexpensive while still offering good food.
The Buttery is located on Queens Street in a historic white house with a covered veranda. It has a pub-type atmosphere inside and a front porch for dining. It also offers unique entertainment, such as King Henry VIII’s Dinner Theater for a mediaeval banquet. The restaurant's menu changes frequently but has a wide selection of dishes, including Welsh rarebit, croquets, quiche, fish & chips, hamburgers, sandwiches, Cornish pastry and steak, crepes and kidney & mushroom pie.
Several locals recommended the Epicurean Bistro. The food is supposed to be great.
And if price is no option, the Shaw Café and Wine Bar offers a unique atmosphere and gourmet cuisine. The restaurant is located in a two-story, circular building with a large circular stairway that dominates the interior. The bar area is toward the back of the restaurant and is decorated in warm colors. It is adorned with a wood bar and a raging fireplace. The restaurant has a roof-top patio and an outdoor patio at ground level.
The menu is filled with gourmet selections that range in price from $16.25 to $29. The Shaw Café has a pastry bar with lots of decadent desserts, including cheesecake, tarts and mousses. It also has plenty of wines to taste. Tip: You can sample the atmosphere by ordering a dessert and cup of Starbuck’s coffee, the brand offered by the restaurant.
Queen Street rolls up on the early side with no apparent entertainment outside weekend festivals and the Shaw Festival theaters. Follow the locals when they get off work, however, and you’ll find the hidden nightspots. For instance, The Olde Angel Inn is set a street back from the main drag on Queen Street. It is an Irish Pub and Inn that offers an enormous portion of fish & chips, a large beer menu and live entertainment in the evening.
