Coffee is one of the world's most popular beverages, after water and tea; but not everyone drinks it due to its caffeine content. Some people are sensitive to caffeine or choose to avoid it for medical reasons – and for these people, decaf coffee is an option where regular coffee is not. Caffeine is of course the chemical compound in coffee which gives it its characteristic energizing properties, but this is not the only reason that people enjoy coffee. The flavor and aroma of coffee are things which people find attractive about this beverage and even if they are not able to drink caffeinated coffee, they can brew coffee using decaf coffee beans.

Decaffeinated coffee was developed in the early 20th century and has become more popular ever since with people who cannot or choose not to consume coffee. The decaffeination process removes close to 97% of the caffeine, which means that decaf coffee beans are not caffeine free in the truest sense of the word, but their caffeine content is so low that they are suitable for those who are sensitive to caffeine.

There are a few different methods of decaffeination used to produce decaf coffee beans, including the Swiss water process, the solvent process and the carbon dioxide process, all of which are effective at removing the vast majority of the caffeine from the coffee. However, some coffee lovers are critical of the solvent process, since it tends to leach away more of the volatile oils from the coffee beans which gives coffee its characteristic aroma and flavor.

Just like caffeinated coffee, there are health benefits associated with drinking decaf coffee. Some of the compounds in coffee have antioxidant properties which protect you on the cellular level from disease and some of the physical effects of aging. However, caffeinated coffee has some downsides along with its beneficial effects. While the stimulant properties of caffeine may be beneficial in some ways, it can also increase heart rate and blood pressure – and caffeine is also known to be addictive.

Coffee may be good for your health – and many hold that decaf coffee is even better for you, especially if you'd prefer to steer clear of caffeine.
