How to Make a Row with a Tractor

    • 1). Set a post on each end of the field. Drive them only deep enough to stay put in the wind, so they may be knocked over by the tractor passing over it without damage.

    • 2). Center your tractor in line with the posts. Seat yourself properly, without shifting side to side, and sight on a central point of the tractor such as the hood line. Drive from post to post without lowering your implement. At the end of the field, simply turn around and follow your tire marks for your "working" pass.

    • 3). On hilly ground or particularly long fields, add more posts. A transit would be helpful here. Have a helper assist by sighting via the transit, and drive posts as required.

    • 4). For an alternate method, if the edges of your field are not square and you would rather follow the geometry of the field, make your "non-working" pass by following the field border. If there are no obstructions, a stick attached to one side of the front end will help as your guide. You may want to make your first 'working' pass with the implement partially dropped (such as a subsoiler, furrow maker or disc, not a plow) to help with holding the ground track.
