How to Configure the Startup Menu in Windows XP
- 1). Right-click the Windows XP "Start" button to open a context menu. Select the Explore option to open the Start menu in a Windows Explorer window.
- 2). Click the plus symbol beside the Programs folder in the folder tree on the left side of the Windows Explorer window. This expands the folder. Navigate through the folders nested within Programs to locate a program you wish to add to your Startup menu.
- 3). Click the icon for a program you wish to add to the Startup menu to select it, then press "Ctrl" and "C" on your keyboard to copy it, or right-click the icon and select Copy from the context menu that opens.
- 4). Click the Startup folder within the Programs folder to select it. Press "Ctrl" and "V" on your keyboard to paste your shortcut into the folder, or right-click the folder and select Paste from the context menu. The shortcut will be added to your Startup menu.
- 5). Check the shortcuts that are contained in the Startup folder to see if there are any programs listed that you don't want to launch automatically when you start your computer. Select them by clicking them, then press the "Delete" key on your keyboard or right-click them and choose Delete from the context menu. You will have to confirm this action; keep in mind that this deletes only the shortcut to the program, not the program itself.
- 6). Close Windows Explorer once you have added and removed program shortcuts and your Startup menu is configured the way you want.
