What to Include in Emergency Kits for Pets
- A first aid kit specially made for pets is available through your veterinarian or your local pet supply store. But a homemade kit is also acceptable, and should include sterile gauze and pads for wrapping injuries, scissors, tweezers, eyedroppers for liquid medication, and any recommendations from your veterinarian.
- Include a minimum of one week's canned or dry food as well as any necessary feeding bowls. A week's worth of bottled water is also extremely important. Be sure to rotate water and food every two months.
- Disposable litter trays will be necessary for cats, while waste bags will be needed for dogs.
- A harness is a must because it will help restrain your pet during stressful times. An animal will instinctively run from disasters, and a harness will hold them better.
- Photocopies of most recent medical records, including vaccinations, and a photo of your pet is important. You might need these for seeking emergency veterinary care or in the event of a lost pet.
- Carriers with a blanket are a must. You might also want to include chew toys for dogs, cat toys and disinfectant for bathroom accidents.
